What these checks are, and what they are not

Screens are part of childhood now. Almost every family is working out where the line sits, and almost none of us were given a map for it. These checks exist to give you a clearer picture of your own house, so that whatever you decide next is a decision rather than a guess.

None of them produce a screen time number, because the number on its own tells you very little. Two children can spend the same hours on a screen and be in completely different positions, depending on what those hours replace, how the screen is being used, and what happens when it goes off. That is what these checks look at.

Which one should I take?

Start with the one-minute check if what you mostly want to know is whether what you are seeing at home is within the normal range. It covers the seven worries parents raise most often.

Take the twelve-question balance check if you want the fuller picture: the role screens play across sleep, friendships, activity, mood and independence, and where the strong points already are.

Take the Three Digital Dangers check if screens have quietly become the default answer in your house, for soothing, for boredom, or for filling time, and you want to see which pattern is strongest.

What happens with your answers

Nothing is emailed to you and nothing is required to see your result. You answer, you get the read-out, and you decide what to do with it. If it turns out things are largely fine, that is a genuinely useful answer, and it is the one plenty of parents get.
